"Is it a kind of a shadow
Reaching into the night
Wandering over the hills unseen
Or is it a dream?"
- Mike Batt, 'Watership Down' soundtrack
The Influences on Kerry Darlington's Breath of the Wild
The vast, subconscious wild has provided a powerful inspiration for artists of all disciplines since time immemorial. In Kerry Darlington's latest painting, she draws from this most potent of concepts and the rich body of work it has inspired through the centuries.
In preparation for the new Unique Edition Breath of the Wild, Kerry drew influences as diverse as the works of Herman Hesse (Siddhartha, Demian, and other writings); invoking the vast untamed wilderness as a spiritual search for wisdom and self-knowledge: as well as the works of authors such as Richard Adams (Watership Down) where the earthy struggles of animals parallel epic quests such as The Odyssey.
“And all the voices, all the goals, all the yearnings, all the sorrows, all the pleasures, all the good and evil, all of them together was the world. All of them together was the stream of events, the music of life.”
- Herman Hesse
Kerry Darlington's Technique
Kerry is no stranger to the atmosphere and spiritual power of the ancient forests; born and raised in North Wales, she still draws inspiration (as well as direct study) from the beautiful and mysterious forests around her home. From the mountain ranges to the craggy windswept coats lines (with unique dune-systems) to cryptic Neolithic remains such as the local pyramid-like structure known only as 'The Gop'.
To evoke the mythical, almost primal themes in this painting, Kerry has chosen a reduced colour palette of wintry, misty tones embellished with silver leaf. The evocative landscape is populated by beautifully realistic depictions of woodland creatures: foxes, hares... And one gorgeously rendered unicorn!
In creating the Unique Edition run: Kerry ensures no two works are alike, with the personal application of silver leaf and 3D elements.
