Star Art

Wyecliffe Galleries is proud to unveil a brand-new collection of original paintings just arrived from much-admired Italian artist Paola Cassais. A New Symbol

For Paola, a sense of belonging and extended family has always been a huge influence on the artist. As well as instilling in her a fierce belief in the power of communities and groups to effect change; it also led to her becoming an pioneer in the artistic industry. A linked interest in natural objects and an increasing appreciation for human relationships has led to Paola’s latest collection – the Star series. In these paintings, the contents is eschewed in favour of a neutral canvas; allowing the vibrant colours of the painted figures to contrast vividly. Paola’s trademark crowd scenes gather in a variety of star-shapes to celebrate her omnipresent themes of community, support and togetherness.

'Look to the Stars'

‘Look to the Stars’ has been an artistic concept long in the making for Paola Cassais. A visionary, the artist cites the influence of clear, midnight skies that reveal the outlines of star-studded galaxies witnessed from the provinces of her Spanish home-land as inspiration behind this beautiful new collection. Stars are wonderful touchstones in art, used to symbolise creativity, hope and optimism. When aligned with Paola’s gift for unifying big ideas and eye-catching motifs, the presence of these paintings are as captivating as the stars themselves. As academic Frances Clarke reminded us all;

“There wouldn’t be a sky full of stars if we were all meant to wish on the same one.”

The colour combination for 'Nowhere But Together' is without a doubt one of Paola's most powerful balance of colour. The subtle touches of green, yellow and orange is as radiant as it can ever be, when you take it all in from afar. From close-up, the arrangement in outdoor activities like kite-flying, running or cycling are finely created to engage further with the viewer. Well-portrayed macro shots, vibrant colours and a budding concept are the three features of a high-quality, Paola Cassais painting that is the gift that keeps on giving for collectors.

Community Spirit

This forward-thinking artist won admiration very early in her career for her delightfully cheerful beachscapes which are a true ode to the best of long summer days. Playing with the formations of her colourful beachgoers, motifs quickly emerged casting long shadows across the sands. Positioned into single hearts, joined hearts and union jacks, the figures stand proud on each canvas. Raised up in lusciously applied acrylic paints in technicolour, each character is slightly three-dimensional, further adding to the affect of long shadows being cast by late afternoon sunshine. A new evolution of this theme, the ‘Look to the Stars’ collection introduces a fresh and ever-more valuable representation of how powerful the actions of local communities can be and contribute to the global neighbour as one world.

Paola has always been acutely aware of issues facing the environment and the role of local communities to play a part in the wider social/political arena. This began to further evolve her art as she began to depict crowd scenes – Intricate paint work to convey an emotional presence on the body's of Paola's subjects is an aspect that showcases human attachment, radiating genuineness to any space.

The Power of Unity

The underlying truth behind her ‘Look to the Stars’ collection is the visual message of human connection; we are bound by our shared experiences, hopes, dreams and wishes. This dynamic approach acknowledges that when difficult times are a distant memory, we will become even more unified as whole. Delighting in the simple experiences of flying a kite, riding a bike and take a photograph for the family album, Paola Cassais portrays unification under any circumstance, contributing to the beauty of her star-shaped pieces, a mission statement which remains unbroken.

The bright, slightly naive nature of these characters convey Paola's trademark attention to detail, the figures employed in a remarkable activity of coming together. Like the entirety of Paola's new, star-like collection, engagers can enjoy the luxury of a new-shaped design but a unified concept that will always remain the same with Paola Cassais, each piece filling the frame with an irresistible sense of energy and movement.

A thoughtful and quietly spoken artist, Scott Bauer’s polite manner is the perfect reflection of a series of accomplished original acrylic works with pristine painted stripes as their signature structure. A genre named by the artist as linear formalism, the term conjures thoughts of complex algebraic formulas, a mindset far away from the freedom of creative imagination. Using fragments of memory along with his perception of the world, the artist distills light and colour into stunningly rendered stripes. Waved, faded and pure, the outcome are pieces both calmly meditative and excitingly vivid. Wyecliffe Galleries are privileged to share an insight in to the mind of this emerging artist.
