Chinese New Year with Darren at Wyecliffe

Gōng xǐ fā cái

A Very Happy New year, or more traditionally “Gōng xǐ fā cái” to all our friends and family at the Wyecliffe gallery!

Today is a very special day for me, as being of Chinese heritage – I am well versed in the traditions and celebrations of the new lunar year.

To mark the occasion, here's some of my favourite red and gold art I've enjoyed since my time starting at Wyecliffe...

Many things signify good-luck and prosperity for the Chinese …especially the colour ‘Red’. Red can be found everywhere during important Chinese celebrations.

Red envelopes can be handed out as special gifts for children, and unmarried persons as a token of good luck and prosperity during the holiday season. It can also be found on many of the decorations – food, and clothing worn on this day.

The most important part of today’s festivities, will be a recognition of those you hold near and dear to you. Shower them with love and take time to remember all the things you are grateful for.
