Beth Nicholas: Ethereal Abstractions

Wyecliffe Galleries is pleased to present the seductive and ethereal abstractions of Beth Nicholas. With dedicated learning in textile design, her meticulous understanding of tonal combinations has found beautiful form in delicate fine art ink works.

Beth Nicholas and Her Technique

Working for days on a single painting, the artist spends hours slowly manipulating the fluid liquid colour to arrive at an accomplished original work; the motion suspended in time, in a similar action as capturing a solar eclipse in a single photographed frame.  Intangible and evocative, Nicholas is heavily influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. The ethos lies in the acceptance of both transience and imperfection. Dreamy in quality, her works visually communicate a feeling of understated elegance which can enhance the environment in which they hang.

Fusing tonal blue pigment from midnight skies to crystal waters and overlaid with liquid gold leaf, Nicholas has elegantly captured a design zeitgeist founded on the fusing of matte and metallic to affect a heady layered contrast.  Explorations have flourished in burnt orange bronze laced with chrome silver and deep grey, adding a warmer offering to her palette. Working on thick abundant paper either left raw and authentic, or mounted onto contemporary diabond the scale of piece ranges from compact to vast 10 feet long masterpieces.
