The World of Becky Smith

Becky Smith

“I've always been involved with art from a young age and studied the subject hoping to develop a career within art. Most of my recent works incorporate gold, copper and silver leaf. Inspired by artists through the ages, I taught myself how to apply and use these time-honoured techniques.”
Becky Smith

“Structurally I took inspiration from deficit interiors; broken plaster board exposing wooden beams, in keeping with the industrial aspect that influence a lot of the work. I then started to think about opposing ideas - ‘new and old’ and ‘life and death’ were the original working titles and this is where the theme developed,"

Having been inspired by her travels to exotic countries; Becky began to study wildlife art techniques, soon developing into her mystical bird of paradise works: dreamlike, vivid landscapes with echoes of the lucid jungle works of Henri Rousseau and Brett-Livingstone Strong. Being able to bring these mesmerising, colourful scenes to life right in front of her became a satisfying therapeutic technique.

... strewn across the plaster and firmly in the foreground is chaotic life and messy interpretations. The pop culture references are deliberately ambiguous and even random with some much darker ones too. I liked the idea of contrasting this against the palette background in something a bit more zen, clean, golden and rich”

Becky Smith lavishes paint upon the smooth surface to form her motifs. Capitalising on the reflective quality of the material, utilising lighting conditions to bring her composition to life as shown in her largest metalic piece to date 'Floral Fantasy'. The reflective quality of her aluminium sheet is laid bare as the surroundings of her blossom tree brightens, which in effect, showcases an unwavering amount of brush stroking quality.

Most of Becky’s recent works incorporate gold, copper and silver leaf. Inspired by artists through the ages, teaching herself the value of such techniques has been the backbone to her success. Now, Becky's confidence to diverse her metal tones into the warm end of the metalic spectrum, like the introduction of copper sheet in her latest 'Crepuscular Light' has left collectors amazed with the sheer conviction to experiment successfully across all medias.

The Creative Process

Becky Smithremains vigilant about the handling of her metal pieces, as any finger prints will oxidate the metal and leave marks. Making sure the tree is central, Smith starts all her tree-like pieces by painting the trunk, then using either fingers or more uncharacteristically, a big brush to create her favourite part 'the top of the tree'. After waiting for each layer to dry, she proceeds to build the different tones and colours. The latter stages of her creative process encompasses using small bits of metal leaf in the tree to try give the effect of the light shinning through and lastly, finishing with a paint pen to add in loads of tiny little dots to build up the detail.

Natures Inspired

After an in-depth Q & A with the incredibly-talented artist, Smith spoke about previous, current and future inspirations that have paved the way for plentiful, successful creations. She sighted her outdoorsy personality along with an en eagerness to explore all corners of the world as the foundations for her nature-inspired pieces. Going on to explain that she always finds herself getting really caught up in the process of building up the layers and experimenting with new techniques, which subsequently becomes an inspiration in itself as Becky "completely cuts herself off from the outside world and solely focuses on what she is doing in the moment."

Starting with the background colours first before adding anything else, Becky utilises loads of different spray paints, metallic powders and metal leaf to build up her nature-inspired peaces. As a very hands on person with her work, Smith on occasion will create the background solely with her hands without the intervention of her trusty brushes. In effect, the detailing of her blossoming trees have become accustomed to the fluency of Becky's steady hands.

The dreamy-looking backgrounds found in Becky's ever-growing collection are inspired from sunsets and pretty skies from holidays that the artist went on. The galaxy theme that runs deep in to her nature-inspired collection is attributed to Becky's love for astrology and star signs as the colours bounce of each-other to create the ultimate piece of artwork. These colours have been used more and more in her seasonal pieces as the countdown to spring takes pace.
