VISCERAL ABSTRACTS
Artist Amy Magee draws on her vast artistic influences and inspiration to create beauty from the imperfect, abrasive urban landscape. Blending a range of mediums to create bold statement abstract artworks.
SPONTANEOUS EMOTION
Growing up in rural England, Amy developed a natural love for painting from an early age. Her early influences were wide-ranging and focused on her fascination with depicting both human form and human expression. She recalls growing up admiring dramatic classical figurations by Michelangelo and Caravaggio whilst witnessing Jenny Saville transcend the boundaries of classical figuration and modern abstraction. A dominant influence arose whilst she was becoming a Bachelor of Psychology at university and resonated with the post-war Abstract Expressionists' exploration of spontaneous emotion.
Magee now works from her studio in Bristol, the city of street art, where tired city walls are transformed into vibrant murals daily, and the birthplace of renowned artists Banksy and Damien Hirst. Here, Magee established her signature style that draws on her vast artistic influences and inspiration to create beauty out of the imperfect, abrasive urban landscape. Blending brushwork, spray paint and industrial mediums, she creates bold statement works that explore topics such as the power of nature, human form, and the immediacy of street art.
To date, Magee was commissioned to produce a series of paintings for the judges' houses in a BBC TV Talent show, recognised in British Vogue and GQ as a recommended artist, and this year has been named Contemporary Artist of the Year 2022 (SME Awards). She continues to produce sold-out collections, and her work now features in many private collections worldwide.
