Rozanne Bell - 'The Contemporary Beatrix Potter'

Rozanne Bell Animals

“Thanks to my Mother, stories were part of my life long before I was able to pick up a pencil. The magic of words held in stories of myth and legend lies deep within the ancient, unchangeable part of me.”
Rozanne Bell

“Structurally I took inspiration from deficit interiors; broken plaster board exposing wooden beams, in keeping with the industrial aspect that influence a lot of the work. I then started to think about opposing ideas - ‘new and old’ and ‘life and death’ were the original working titles and this is where the theme developed,"

... strewn across the plaster and firmly in the foreground is chaotic life and messy interpretations. The pop culture references are deliberately ambiguous and even random with some much darker ones too. I liked the idea of contrasting this against the palette background in something a bit more zen, clean, golden and rich”

A New Tone

Rozanne Bell's connection with animals goes beyond the day-to-day care of her four small (and big) dogs, it stretches to the smeared application of her strong paint brushes acquired to replicate the playful charisma of her household pets. Lately for Rozanne Bell, the progression of her quirky nature has subtly taken pace around her recent creations, a purposeful act to bring joy and character to family households as Bell's wild and domestic animals touch the hearts of all animal lovers. This new tone, however, has not come without special note of Rozanne's draughtsmanship to the abundant flora and fauna of England and the extraordinary colours, light and contrasts of homeland, Zimbabwe

Peter Rabbit Inspired

The brave and rather impulsive rabbit that storytellers have become accustomed to seeing from the tangible pages of a book to the screens of everybody's living room, Peter has become the backbone to one of Rozanne's most long-lasting collections that showcase the charismatic animal in a gloss resin finish. Only now, however, the progression of her fluffy bunny has been more detectable as he skips around with companions, two, three or sometimes four at a time! All with a mischievous look on his face.

Rozanne Bell's 'Luna' is one of those hazy paintings that includes features of summer time with open meadows and mischievous rabbits - all full of life and some say reminiscent of the conservationist, Beatrix Potter. Given the unflinching look in his eyes, the rabbit has been portrayed in a way that is captivating for anyone who wishes to engage with the British treasure. Original acrylic on board with a resin finish.

Beatrix Potter's animals were created with emphasis of conveying the traits that make up British culture, from the abundant flora of countryside England to the catching namesake of her animals. 'Rosie' is a British rabbit, as British as you can get, actually... She was created to be outdoorsy, but only when the sun would pierce through the springtime clouds, otherwise, they would be found tucked inside a deep meadow.

Rozanne Bell's 'Milo' painting differs from her other rabbit inclusive pieces... but only through the different levels of maturity. From intricate stems of her meadow flowers to the telling signs of an infant, playful rabbit, Rozanne Bell has drawn on an artistic perception that generates energy to the painting and it's surrounding space... A brighter colour pallet also reaffirms the glowing presence of her Beatrix Potter inspired original.

'Robbie' the cock paves the way for another one of Rozanne Bell's countryside-inspired pieces... From a farm of some sort, 'Robbie' has been painted with an original acrylic on board and resin, then topped with remnants of delicate gold leaf. Undoubtedly, Robbie has been recreated in a Rozanne Bell style that allows animals of the countryside to be portrayed in an uplifting way, the promotion of these animals are created so vividly.

Family-friendly Animals

Rozanne has been renewing her fascination with her childhood home and is producing the equivalent of her native, honey-badger, a magnificent original in resin and acrylic. Like all Rozanne's works, this piece has been made on the foundations of acrylic on board with hand-poured resin originals. Each work is entirely unique as Bell does not produce prints of limited edition series, which in it's own right, makes her subjects even more special. With every animal piece created, a strong attachment is formed with the pack of creatures, some up to five at a time as each piece becomes a fitting rendition to all domestic households.

Rozanne Bell's '2 Chickens' is a sketch that gives collectors a deep insight at the beginning of every Rozanne Bell creative process. Using minimal mediums to showcase the Beatrix Potter-esque animals, Rozanne remains adamant that her sketches are the "closest thing to my artistic vision that you can possibly get" since there are no refinements, planning processes or layers induced, just the artist's imagination and her trusty pencil.

Rozanne Bell's 'Goose 2' resonates with the artist's affection towards British birds, both inland and water. An elegant animal as portrayed through Rozanne Bell's neat, curve-like shapes, 'Goose 2' has been created on the premise of an imperfect drawing and possible character of the bird itself. It's the exuberant approach that matches both the Zimbabwe-born artist's style and the childhood illustrator, Beatrix Potter approach to creative processes.

Rozanne Bell's 'Hare' can be seen with it's characteristically long ears that gives the mammal it's large scale... Beyond that, the artist purposely sketches the upper part of the hare's body so leaving up to the viewer's imagination whether if it is female, male, large or small in stature for it's natural size. A rough original sketch on board showcases no solid outlines but more a bleary interpretation to make Rozanne's sketches as authentic as it possibly can be.

Rozanne Bell's extended love for domestic animals is shown through her craggy sketch of a household cat. Sitting on all it's four paws, the positioning of Bell's household feline depicts her patient longing for food (probably) as the cat adopted whilst in a self-catered cottage on the coast purrs softly with contentment. Full Certification & Documentation included and Interest Free Credit Available for this one-off sketch.

Rozanne Bell And Friends

Not content with merely depicting the festivities of holiday makers, the artist doesn't forget her flying-frenzy friends. A hoard of furry painted portraits joins the ensemble of cats, rabbits and all land animals alike. It is, after all, the friendship that Rozanne Bell possess's with her household animals that allows the artist to feel more connected with this growing collection. The beady eyes of her entourage are just another feature to resemble the notable elements of Britain's night owl.

Rozanne Bell's introduction of gold and silver leaf outlines her confident approach in utilising such fragile media. The progression to combine this media alongside her renowned acrylic method has indeed created aesthetically-pleasing works of art. In particular, her bird-like pieces have given the opportunity to showcase her application talent as her close-knit birds poise themselves on a tree trunk during the night shift.

Rozanne Bell selects a stereotypical approach to her resin finish paintings as her lust to generate a response from her subjects remains the same, which are mainly tongue-in-cheek. 'Work it baby' has been the revelation in tone that Bell has incorporated at the heart of her wildlife pieces. The acclaimed approach brings a wealth of joy to any interior as the essence of humour is laid bare with her subject's floral 'crown'.

Who can forget Rozanne Bell's extended love for domestic animals through her hard (and soft) paint brushing strokes of Mr whiskers. Showcasing what looks to be a long pointy hat, the introduction of household clothes has long been a feature for her wildlife subjects, the playful twist conveys a a message that even the most unlikely combinations can still have it's place, especially if it makes you happy, like Mr whiskers here.

'Kittenish' combines two underlying passions of the wildlife artist; floral work, and 'animals from the wrong side of the tracks.' Both eminently-worked genres from Rozanne uses acrylic on resin board finish, allowing two entirely different content-approaches to bounce of each-other in a positive way. It is indeed a style that we may start to become accustomed to as Bell's extensive ranges of genres will be brought together in a completely new tone.
