Abstracts Influenced by Nature

“I’m inspired by nature’s transcendent beauty. The changing and fleeting sunlight fills the sky with glorious colours and imbues the land with a spiritual aura. It’s the peaceful and ethereal moments in the outdoors that I focus on painting, not necessarily exact depictions of a particular place.”
Patrice Erickson

“Structurally I took inspiration from deficit interiors; broken plaster board exposing wooden beams, in keeping with the industrial aspect that influence a lot of the work. I then started to think about opposing ideas - ‘new and old’ and ‘life and death’ were the original working titles and this is where the theme developed,"

... strewn across the plaster and firmly in the foreground is chaotic life and messy interpretations. The pop culture references are deliberately ambiguous and even random with some much darker ones too. I liked the idea of contrasting this against the palette background in something a bit more zen, clean, golden and rich”

A Redefining Style

A distinguished painter working in oils and acrylics, the team at Wyecliffe Galleries are proud to welcome Patrice Erickson to our portfolio. Representing the artist exclusively in the UK, we are pleased to present the artists debut series of original works painted especially for our collectors. Based in the beautiful area of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Erickson has found a passion for the abundant natural scenery that sits around her; from the lakes of Stony Creek to the botanical wonders at Bald Mountain. The artist was chosen for our catalogue where she excels in adapting landscapes so familiar to herself and translating them to memories of the best days we have spent in the countryside, that we can all share as a collective. We are proud to share an overview of the very first works to arrive with Wyecliffe, as well as an insight into her working practice.

Wooden Panel Squares

Patrice Erickson’s wooden panel artworks are inspired by the outdoors. The colours are often vibrant yet peaceful, softly blended, gradually transitioning from one colour to another. She eliminates all signs of human activity. There are no buildings or roads, just an appreciation of what outdoor life can bring to the table. Through her paintings she’s showing her respect for nature and reminding herself that we need to be grateful and take care of our planet; Erickson's foundation choice of wood panel is a practical representation of exactly that.

Building on her environmentally-friendly substructure, Erickson likes to leave the viewer with a sense of serenity, peace, and reverence for nature - immersed in the beauty. 'Evening Cove' is one of those blue-dominant pieces that oozes tranquillity for any kind of space. Hills blurring into the background, Patrice Erickson's eye for mixture is the true ultimatum that flows with all the elements of her piece. Image Size: 30.4 x 30.4 cm / 12" x 12"

Patrice Erickson is also known for her incorporation of the warmer tones of a colour pallet to project the rays of spring and summer time, a fitting style for this time of year some may say. In particular, that blending element we have been accustomed to seeing is in full force with Patrice's 'River Crossing' masterclass as the yellow to dark-red interchange showcases sunset on Mars. Image Size: 20.3 x 20.3 cm / 8" x 8"

Landscapes By Erickson

The typography of Patrice's wider-shaped artworks have been regarded as some of her more aesthetically-pleasing paintings as the entirety of her environments are laid bare, nothing can be hidden or missed when so much is included. Eliminating details of Erickson's observed scene to simplify down to the essential elements for her compositions, the artist considers how best to use the shape of her pieces to further convey the feeling of the place. By abstracting in this way, there is so much to show for as a result.

Portraits By Erickson

Erickson strives to paint oil-based portraits with depth and richness of colour and luminosity. These paintings are strong statements about serene moments created to give a sense of Patrice's personal experiences with mother nature. 'Mountains Rising' is a combination of rich colours applied from top to bottom; an influx of outdoorsy scenes and experiences stemming from sunset gazing to radiant blue skies on a weekend morning and the many ventures appreciating what vegetation has to offer. The vibrancy of Erickson's portraits to showcase nature's beauty is a joy for any indoor (or outdoor) space.

Making of 'Twilight Mist'

Providing some key insight into Erickson's creative process for her artworks, the artist enjoys an organised approach regarding the process. Specifically, Patrice adopts a layer on layer approach which can provide a fuller picture as the foundations of her piece are distinguishable which further, communicates a more accurate story. In contrast to some of the more modern methods of contemporary artists, different approaches may appear more spontaneous, but with Erickson, the foreseeable approach to paint things in steps details a certain confidence that any landscape collector will become attached to.

STEP 1

"After lightly sketching in the scene with pastel pencil I began painting from the top in a quick application of the blue sky."

STEP 2

"Transitioning to a mauve mist. Inspiration from where I grew up in New England, the coastline and beaches to the forested mountains; the beauty of the Great Lakes, hiking trails, and numerous nature sanctuaries of my home in Michigan; and the stunning sunsets."

STEP 3

"Painting in the rocks - Dark in tone."

STEP 4

"Adding the blue water around the rocks completes the first application of colour."

STEP 5

"After the first layer of paint dried, I went over the whole painting again to build up more layers to refine colours, colour blends, and to adjust the shape of objects. Just like before I began at the top."

STEP 6

"The blue sky is done just short of the mauve section. The next stage shows those two areas softly blended."

STEP 7

"This painting is completed here after adding refining layers to the foreground. What is not shown is how I finished off the 1.5" sides. I continue the painting around all the sides. I try to do this as I go along, but usually need to do some touch ups."

Message From Erickson

"I’m extremely grateful and honoured for this opportunity with Wyecliffe Galleries and to be able to broaden my exposure internationally in your beautiful country. My wish for everyone during these scary and uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic is to be safe, be well, love one another, and try to find moments of peace and calm each day be it through meditation, a quiet walk, or the healing power of art."

Stay Safe,

Patrice Erickson
