A New Instalment

“Thanks to my Mother, stories were part of my life long before I was able to pick up a pencil. The magic of words held in stories of myth and legend lies deep within the ancient, unchangeable part of me.”
Kerry Darlington

“Structurally I took inspiration from deficit interiors; broken plaster board exposing wooden beams, in keeping with the industrial aspect that influence a lot of the work. I then started to think about opposing ideas - ‘new and old’ and ‘life and death’ were the original working titles and this is where the theme developed,"

... strewn across the plaster and firmly in the foreground is chaotic life and messy interpretations. The pop culture references are deliberately ambiguous and even random with some much darker ones too. I liked the idea of contrasting this against the palette background in something a bit more zen, clean, golden and rich”

Locking arms with Dorothy's companions as the characters are spun above the Wizard of Oz landscape, the details of this glistening piece are hand-finished in Kerry’s signature gloss resin. 'Dorothy's Dream' has taken Kerry months of solid dedication as the artist invests precious time in conjuring up 3D elements to bring life to her characters.

The fifth snippet showcases the Royal Palace of Oz in a vivid, Kerry Darlington style; bold, full of colour and the yellow-dust pathway guiding people through the story-line. Only her fourth creation within a sought-after series, Kerry’s previous sell-out with ‘The Wonderful Wizard of OZ’ paves the way for a highly anticipated chapter as Kerry’s OZ journey continues.

Three years since Dorothy skipped down the yellow brick road with friends, Kerry had decided that the ensemble should get back together as another glossy piece comes to launch, only this time, 'Dorothy's Dream' expands on it's character selection as the good and bad witches become notable features in the top left section of her gloss resin finish.

A Message From Kerry

The Sequence

The stories that clients have shared with us have a common theme – Darlington artworks hanging in family homes, rekindling memories of happy times. The works themselves also helping to create nostalgic feelings for the next generation of art lovers. As it turns out, Dorothy was right, there really is no place like home, especially if it has a Kerry Darlington painting hanging on it’s walls - From the first to her most recent instalment, Kerry has maintained her storytelling trademark by creating progressive instalments of her Oz collection and thus making her pieces a fitting rendition for any collector's household.

Kerry Darlington has long been an advocate of believing in oneself; the pioneer of the use of gloss resin which is now a trademark of her sell out unique limited editions. The journey to such belief is echoed within her second instalment of the Oz collection, as 'Dorothy'walks down the iconic yellow brick road, she is found surpassing obstacles along the way, the meaning of her piece is indeed reminiscent of Kerry's conviction to use daring media.

This unique and rare edition sees Kerry Darlington's entourage further along their quest and several chapters on. Having crept through the Haunted Forest, passing signs urging them to turn back to avoid the Witches Castle, the gang led by Dorothy Gale have all but stepped back into the sunlit path of the Yellow Brick Road. Spurred on by the creative use of 3D elements to add life to her storytelling pieces, 'Wonderful Wizard of Oz' is a trademark of Kerry's style.

The Creative Process

Starting every process with a a primed wooden board cut to the size Kerry requires. Darlington would draw down the main elements to then pave the way for painting background colour - this preliminary stage will inevitably bring life to her Oz pieces as Kerry's consistently bright colour pallet brings a glowing presence to all her artwork. Subsequent layers of resin are painted upon, building up and intensifying the background colours, or painting over pastels to give a gentle translucent colour. Upon the top layer of resin, Darlington adds the finer details of the piece, add small white highlights and the finished image is archival-varnished. Done.

Kerry Sketches

Alive in Kerry's preliminary creative stage, her pencil sketches brings a wave of authenticity as it remains difficult to hide the thought that this is where all of Darlington's critically-acclaimed pieces are born. As a result, many Kerry collector's have remained vigilant to snap up the original work of art as an accomplishment in owning a piece of Kerry's creative process and a piece of her imagination that is deeply embedded within her characters and the morals that she portrays after each purposeful piece.

The 'Wonderful Wizard of OZ' sketch is a rare insight into Kerry's exacting craft and artistic expression and the first fully detailed sketch Kerry has ever released to public market. In this study of 'Wonderful Wizard of Oz', we see the emergence of what is now the composition of one of her fastest ever selling editions. Her chosen subjects makes it easy for people to resonate with as the well-documented traits per character makes her sketch a perfect match for all.

The four friends (and of course not forgetting Toto at their heels) embody a very particular kind of wholesomeness which transcends generations. This is where innocent insecurities motivate self-improvement in stark contrast to a society obsessed with image consciousness. Of course, we the audience gazing at Darlington’s vision of this classic novel already know what the adventurers are yet to discover; that their heart’s desires already exist within themselves.
