SOUND, PERFORMANCE AND VISUAL ARTIST

In collaboration with BartonBorn Art Studios (headed by artist Lhouette) Andrew's latest works dive into his archives remastering his gig poster, album artwork, event performance night and animal characters illustrations into his first volume of fine art painted poster works.

ART IN ALL FORMS

Andrew Milk (b. 1985) is a sound, performance and visual artist based in Glasgow. He studied Illustration at Kent Institute of Art & Design. Hemoved to London in 2009, where he became heavily engaged with the underground music community, establishing a DIY record label and promoting queer and feminist punk events.

Andrew began playing in bands with no previous experience, but soon found himself touring internationally as a musician. Using pencils, inks, paints and found imagery, Andrew created stage design, album artwork, gig posters, zines, merchandise and more, to unite his visual and sound creative practices.

This new style culminates the use of polycrylic pigment transfers over vibrant heavily worked aerosol & acrylic painted panels.

The name 'Milk' originated from Andrew's time at university where he joined an existing event organiser at Club MILK putting on gigs. After moving to London he continued this venture alone as club MILK. At this time the reign of MySpace was ending, and numerous people, artists, punks and promoters would have their profile name as their pseudonym or what they wanted to promote most, and Andrew Milk was born.

His alter ego ‘Pink Pound’ is the larger than life drag demoness, charming coquette, and acerbic artiste persona that Andrew uses for solo performance and electronic music projects.

Q&A

Tell us a little about yourself, including your interests or other projects

Music is my main interest, I play in bands including Shopping, Current Affairs and my solo project 'Pink Pound'. I promote and organise gigs and hep run a venue space in Glasgow. I also used to run a small record label.

What are your main motivations when making art?

To make something that i'm proud of- I want to make work that inspires, uplifts and empowers queer and marginalised people.

When did you first begin to take an interest in art?

I don't even remember a specific time when I wasn't interested in drawing and creating. I think being really into comics growing up kept me drawing and wanting to get better so i could emulate those artists.

Who's your biggest inspiration artistically?

Mostly inspired by artists that broke the mold and blended the personal and political like Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger and I find people like Andrew Logan and the Divine David and of course Leigh Bowery heavily inspiring for their convention defying life as art work and punk humour.

What’s your favorite artwork, and why?

It changes but I have an enduring love for Derek Jarman's Blue, which is just a stunning use of sound.

How do you know when a work is finished?
I think you feel when you're close to adding too much to anything - a song, a painting - when you know you could keep going but you're no longer sure you should, and from that point on you just have to trust yourself. Doesn't always work but its not an exact science.

What does your art mean to you?

It's about connection, with others and with yourself. It's essential for a happy life
