Gareth Tristan Evans - Art In Layers

Urban Geishas

Gareth Tristan Evans has exploded onto the contemporary art scene with his sensational 'Urban Geisha' and 'My Father’s Books' collections of edition prints and original collages. Gareth is an artist that has immediately captivated an audience with his potent and enigmatic portraiture, showcased in his newest masterpiece 'Cola'.

Exclusive to Wyecliffe Galleries

Sending shockwaves across the art world, Gareth Tristan Evans has unveiled his first ever exclusive portrait in collaboration with Wyecliffe Galleries. New composition 'Cola' blends a Spaghetti-Western muse with the Eastern stylings of Evans’ native Singapore. Available as a deluxe XL canvas as well as a boutique paper edition, each is heavily embellished with shimmering metallic leaf.

Delving into the heritage and global culture of Americana, this compelling portrait borrows from the universal language of the big brand – re-staging one of the most recognisable logos in the world, Cola is an advertisement for Evan’s vision of multi-cultural beauty.

Converging Cultures

A true multi-disciplinary creative with a multi-cultural personal heritage to match, Gareth Tristan Evans was born in Singapore and spent his childhood in the beautiful Welsh valleys. With his studio now based in Cheshire, Evans fashions the influences of his origin in South-East Asia with iconography borrowed from the urban street art and natural landscape of the West. Growing up on comics from the multiverse of 2000AD such as Judge Dredd and having gained a degree in classics, the contrast in ideologies between throw-away cartoon and enduring ancient history create a compelling tension across time, born out in his works.

Within his acclaimed ongoing series Urban Geisha, the artist presents 21st Century visions of the traditional Japanese geiko. Interpreting the geisha’s exotic drama by sheathing them in kimonos formed from vintage textiles and floral pattens, the reoccurrence of a roundel in each work places every muse firmly in the centre of a target. Enigmatically titled works include ‘The Anatomy of Persephone’ and ‘Sphinx’, suggest that Evans empowers some portraits with the heady power of the gods and the mythical, whilst others such as ‘Patience’ are charged with allegory.

Walking in the footsteps of renowned 20th Century conceptual creatives such as John Stezaker and early pop artist Richard Hamilton who championed the use of upcycled images, Gareth Tristan Evans evolves the idea for modern times by harnessing imagery sourced online. A mixed media artist at heart, techniques range from digital composition to capturing original photography for use in his works and include traditional draughtsmanship as well as mark-making. Developed with the keen eye and approach of a painter, many countless hours are spent adjusting the juxtaposition of portrait, design and colour in the search of the perfect visual harmony.

Transformed by the artist’s choice of printed medium, titles are available in formats including hand highlighted paper prints, XL Deluxe canvas editions and revolutionary skate decks. Gareth Tristan Evans offers an innovative and fresh interpretation of his own works each reflecting his chosen method of presentation.   Multi-layered, both literally and symbolically, XL Deluxe editions are laced with gold and metal leaf, as well as Hanko and Japanese postage stamps before highly textured raised 3D panels are introduced, adding a tactile and geometric flair

Via his side projects renovating suitcases to re-purpose as modern sound systems (and the origin of his pseudonym Trunk of Funk), Gareth Tristan Evans has become an artist adept at combining highly charged traditional notions with cutting edge digital prowess. Aligning retro, vintage and modern paradigms in explosive urban portraiture, Evans is amongst the most fascinating artists to emerge in recent years.
