Lhouette

''The roots of my work are steeped in pop art methodology - the appropriation and recontextualising of existing imagery through mixed applications is a big part of my practice. Popular culture, brands, icons, TV, film, and the continual play of form, colour and pattern are all recurring themes within my visual language.
I love the idea of not 100% knowing what future direction my artwork may take...it's one huge adventure of discovery''.

Lhouette is regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s leading urban pop artists. His meteoric rise has been nothing short of remarkable.

ABOUT LHOUETTE

Over the last ten years the meteoric rise of British artist Lhouette (Born Ciarán Robinson) has been nothing short of remarkable. Gaining his pseudonym from a series of works featuring a cast of striking yet subversive female silhouettes (such as the legendary painting 'Voyager'), Lhouette is regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s leading pop artists.

Having meticulously developed his craft to produce standout works utilising raw or abandoned materials coated in his signature jam-packed collage stencil and painted aerosol work, the artist has gained critical recognition for his for his 'Post Urban Glamour' and 'Pop Maximalist' concepts.

Lhouette became widely known from 2012, having gained representation from a series of distinguished commercial galleries across the UK. This presence immediately led to a new generation of urban art collectors acquiring key early works. A series of sell-out solo exhibitions alongside published editions and original collections soon followed.

Lhouette became widely known from 2012, having gained representation from a series of distinguished commercial galleries across the UK. This presence immediately led to a new generation of urban art collectors acquiring key early works. A series of sell-out solo exhibitions alongside published editions and original collections soon followed.

Born in 1985 in Luton Town England, aged 17 Lhouette studied art and design for 3 weeks at Central Bedfordshire College before opting out to enrol into the Royal Navy. Four years and 21 countries later Lhouette returned home to set up his first studio practice. Aged just 21, Lhouette was born.

Though also drawing inspiration from East London’s art scene, the influence of the long stints spent in the Caribbean, South America and Europe can also be found in Lhouette’s work today. Surrounded by different cultures and colours, inspiration from these travels were collated in scrap books curating postcards, souvenirs, and his own conceptual drawings.

Between 2010 - 2012 to enhance his understanding of running an dedicated studio, Lhouette completed a postgraduate Diploma in Art Management at Birkbeck University of London. In 2017 the artist established his independent studios in an area of outstanding natural beauty in leafy Bedfordshire; a large converted barn enables him to produce outstanding works to match the scale of his ambition.

Artworks across Lhouette’s portfolio of landmark originals, deluxe hybrid editions and distinctive wall sculptures have been widely presented in galleries, museums and art fairs internationally, including the UK, USA and Hong Kong. Notable presentations include early works showcased at British institution The Houses of Parliament as well as works hand selected for display at prestigious fine art auction house Christie’s, London.

In 2016 Lhouette was recognised by the BBC London News with a dedicated televised interview surrounding his exhibition 'Post Urban Glamour' and 4-month artist residency at London's 45 Park Lane, having been chosen to exhibit by an art committee including such luminaries as Sir Peter Blake. In the same year Lhouette also received press coverage online and in print by the Evening Standard for his community based art programmes and workshops for young people in Angell Town Brixton, during the 'The Estate Were In' Campaign.

In 2017 the artist selected Wyecliffe Galleries to officially represent his work internationally, involving a series of sell out events and new collection launches. A relationship which has propelled Lhouette's work into the homes of prominent art collectors worldwide; notably including esteemed Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas. Lhouette also created his largest privately acquired body of work to date in collaboration with the gallery; 15 works were commissioned and installed as a permanent exhibition in an exquisite property custom designed and 3 years in the planning and building. Pushing the artist to produce some of his most compelling works, each was designed to enhance the architecture of the building.

In 2018 the artist partnered with Purling London, and transformed a full-scale chess set into a fun fully functional work of art named 'More or Less Chess'. The work was exhibited at the renowned WCHOF Museum St. Louis Missouri USA, during curated showcase, 'Painted Pieces'. His transformation of these classic Staunton pieces into a playable contemporary work of art went on to be referenced as an example of the epitome of artisan craft and artistic vision, by BBC’s the Great British Pottery Throw Down.

Having completed a number of private commissions for Ronan and Storm Keating, Lhouette has also collaborated with this respected duo to raise vital funds for the Marie Keating Foundation and Cancer Research UK, presented at their glittering Emeralds and Ivy Ball. 2020 witnessed further partnership between Lhouette and Keating with the inception of seminal work ‘Knight Nurse’. Commissioned especially for song ‘Little Thing Called Love’, this flagship original features as the centrepiece for the music video as well as the cover art for the single. A composition devoted to the response to COVID-19 and which will likely become a lifetime defining experience for a generation, the original was featured in the Modern & Post-War British auction at Sotheby’s London in July 2020. Smashing all estimates, the original work sold for a landmark £32,500.

Intricately intertwining lowbrow pop culture iconography and mixed media into a distinct visually arresting collection, Lhouette’s work has won patrons and advocates such as Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas, the Khayami Family, the Dorchester Collection, Ronan and Storm Keating, and the world’s foremost designer of Formula One, engineering genius Adrian Newey OBE.

VOYAGER

A homage to all-things nautical, the origins of 'Voyager' can perhaps be traced back to Lhouette's personal history and time serving in the British Royal Navy. Having travelled to 21 countries in just 4 years by sea, the opportunity to experience the cultures of the Caribbean, Far East and South America have left a legacy upon the artist and his oeuvre. Enriched with 20th Century cinematic and comic book references, Lhouette entices us to embrace the danger and adventure of the ocean; the chilling mouth of Jaws emerges amongst the distinctive typography of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. A female muse acts a stunning literal and metaphorical reference to the figurehead bust placed at the bow of a ship.

The remarkable original of 'Voyager' has been installed at a sensational property beside the largest private aquarium in the United Kingdom; a dramatic entrance in which both setting and fine art are in perfect harmony. Transformed to edition print, Lhouette has re-imagined the work into a stunning Boutique Edition format; featuring his signature uniquely ripped decoupage paper the surface is finished with glimmering diamond dust.

This piece is a commentary on current events, much like my recent work 'Knight Nurse'. Playing on the trends of 'fake' and repetitive news in a world where people are so reliant on what they're seeing on the media. We as consumers constantly have to decide what to believe is real, especially this year with Covid being such an invisible thing that has encompassed the world's media.

Lhouette plays with frame stylings borrowed from centuries old masterpieces, as well as Peter Blake’s early Pop Art pieces. An artist with an exceptional understanding of not only the languages of art history and global culture, but for the application of artistic materials has resulted in innovation in both original work and boutique limited edition.

SHOW ME SOMETHING REAL

Galloping at lightning speed, a mythical unicorn leaves a trail of pop iconography blazing in its wake. As Lhouette’s flagship representative, Wyecliffe Galleries were proud to unveil ‘Show Me Something Real’; the artist’s first major release since ‘Knight Nurse’ smashed estimates at Sotheby’s London. Hugely anticipated, the work was available as a hand finished boutique edition as well as a Deluxe XL exclusively available at Wyecliffe Galleries.

A commentary on the illusion of contemporary life, Lhouette plays with the rhetoric surrounding fake news and conspiracy theories. Pondering our reliance on screens for information broadcast by the media, the filtered photos associated with the Instagram generation alongside our newfound dependence on video calls to stay connected with our loved ones – the idea of virtual reality has never been more apt. In in a time when we are fighting an invisible enemy, Lhouette incredibly unites the question of what is true and what is myth in this daring new composition.

"Lhouette’s position at the forefront of the contemporary pop art movement is unparalleled; with Swarm looking set to make its mark in history as part of this unique trilogy of titles.

"Advertising dominated big billboards, magazines and TV, which is what Pop Art drew from with it's repetitive imagery. In the modern age however, all of the advertising in condensed into our phones and we are constantly exposed to an endless stream of iconography and terms. I want to show this with the continuous layering of references in my work."

Knight Nurse - Supporting Unicef

Commissioned by the Keatings’ especially for song Little Thing Called Love, this deluxe-scale original features as the centrepiece for the music video as well as the cover art for the single. A composition devoted to what might become a lifetime defining experience for a generation, the shared global response to COVID-19 has produced inspirational acts of philanthropy which will contribute to society. With title featuring a play-on-words from the medicinal flu treatment Night Nurse, Knight Nurse will sit firmly amongst the landmark moments of authentic artistic accomplishment. Capturing the zeitgeist of a year in which we have all been speaking a language punctuated by new terminology such as ‘lockdown’ and ‘social distancing’, Lhouette powerfully summarises our new reality in his inimitable genre of Pop Maximalism.

“I really wanted to fill the piece with things that everyone could relate to - perhaps more of a British take on the experience... The sway towards the digital has also really interested me; the need to shop online is referenced in the add to cart button, and video calling to stay in touch. Moving to the virtual streams also juxtaposes well with the re-emergence of natural habitats in response to the decline of international travel and human presence.”

Lhouette Interview - May 2020

“I really wanted to fill the piece with things that everyone could relate to - perhaps more of a British take on the experience, I’ve included the bunting as a small token to VE Day 75th Anniversary celebrations which raised spirits. There is also a teapot as a tribute to the British nations answer to most problems, ‘let’s have a cup of tea’. Washing your hands, padlocks to symbolise lockdown, the weighbridge 2-meter sign to signify social distancing…there have been lots of new rules and behaviours we’ve adopted during this time. The sway towards the digital has also really interested me; the need to shop online is referenced in the add to cart button, and video calling to stay in touch. Moving to the virtual streams also juxtaposes well with the re-emergence of natural habitats in response to the decline of international travel and human presence.”

SHOWS/EXHIBITIONS

Sponsored by Carbon Funding Consultants, this exclusive event was a spectacular evening with our entire Weybridge showrooms dressed in Lhouette art.Our Weybridge showrooms were packed full of enthusiastic Lhouette collectors, creating a buzzing atmosphere.

The evening entailed an opportunity to see all Lhouette's artwork in person. Later in the evening, Lhouette talked about his work, where he draws inspiration from and a little bit about the new editions he launched at this event.

Following this, Lhouette even gave us a live demonstration where he worked on some of his new artworks live, an incredible rare experience for everyone to witness his honed technique.

Envisioned as a modern-day pilgrimage to times in which neon ruled and cassette tapes were plenty; the decades of the 60s, 70s and 80s were the mood board for Lhouette’s debut solo exhibition ‘Video Heaven’, proudly hosted in our Weybridge showrooms. Inspired by every film genre from Horror to Crime, the installation was completed with an altarpiece in which Twiggy was cast as a religious icon over-seeing events. Guests also witnessed a landmark moment in the presentation of his first-ever wall sculptures.
