Created by British contemporary artist Louise Dear, 'The Love Affair' is a one-of-a-kind mixed-media portrait on aluminium, bringing together expressive female portraiture, luminous metallic surfaces and the exuberant floral imagery synonymous with Dear's distinctive practice. Part of the artist's Compact Classics collection, this original revisits a much-loved composition with a new sense of restraint, allowing line, gesture and the beauty of the exposed surface to take centre stage.

Romantic, intoxicating and unapologetically feminine, 'The Love Affair' is a portrait caught somewhere between concealment and revelation. Dear's female figure emerges from an extraordinary abundance of flowers, her face partially obscured by sweeping blooms while the opposing side of the composition opens onto a luminous gold ground. The effect is seductive; the eye is invited to discover the portrait gradually rather than absorb it all at once.

Hot pinks, flashes of orange and acid green move through the floral forms, interrupted by exposed passages of metallic surface and Dear's fluid black line. Her intricately styled hair becomes almost ornamental in itself, echoing the curves and rhythms of the flowers beside it. Figure and decoration begin to merge, transforming the portrait into something simultaneously glamorous, expressive and beautifully enigmatic.

That balance between abundance and restraint lies at the heart of the Compact Classics. Having refined her distinctive mixed-media practice over many years, Dear created the collection as an opportunity to return to some of her most recognisable imagery and explore what remains when the composition is distilled to its essential marks.

In 'The Love Affair', that reduction gives the drawing remarkable presence. Flowers are allowed to exist as energetic outlines rather than being fully resolved, while areas of open gold provide a counterpoint to the riot of colour elsewhere. The simplicity is deceptive; every line becomes more visible, every gesture more important.

Created on aluminium using mixed media including gloss paint, gold leaf, diamond dust and glitter, 'The Love Affair' possesses a luminosity that changes with its environment. The reflective ground catches shifting light while vivid pigment, metallic detail and sparkling surface elements give the original a physical richness that cannot be fully conveyed on screen.

At 70 × 50cm, 'The Love Affair' represents an exceptional entry point into Louise Dear's original portfolio. The Compact Classics were conceived to open original ownership to a wider circle of collectors, presenting celebrated elements of Dear's visual language as a tightly focused series of one-off works.

For the collector drawn to Louise Dear's distinctive combination of femininity, colour and fearless decorative expression, 'The Love Affair' is particularly captivating; a portrait that reveals more of itself the longer you look.
