In Scott Bauer's recent work, he has been exploring a more expressionist vocabulary, laying paint on in more subtle modulations of colour, but also creating rhythms of form that push and pull across the surface of the canvas. In this case the push and pull runs vertically over the picture, reminding the artist, quite literally, of a tide. The ground of the canvas has been worked up with layers of gesso and white paint that act as voids against the layers of colour laid on more freely in clusters of lines.
