Lucy Meets Mr Tumnus - Kerry Darlington

Some of the greatest adventures begin with the simplest of encounters. A little girl steps through an old wardrobe, discovers a snow-covered forest and meets a curious creature carrying an umbrella and a collection of brown-paper parcels. In Lucy Meets Mr Tumnus, Kerry Darlington brings to life one of the most beloved moments from C. S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the enchanting story that first introduced readers to the magical world of Narnia.

Standing beneath the warm glow of an old-fashioned lamppost, Lucy Pevensie meets Mr Tumnus, the kindly but conflicted faun whose friendship will become an important part of her extraordinary journey. With his curling horns, pointed ears and wonderfully expressive face, Tumnus appears every inch the fantastical woodland creature. His red scarf catches the winter breeze as he balances his parcels beneath one arm, while Lucy, dressed in brilliant blue and green, looks towards him with a mixture of curiosity and quiet trust.

Around them, Kerry's enchanted Narnian forest glistens with snow and ice. Delicate branches reach across the composition in shades of sapphire, turquoise and frosted white, while an unexpected radiance of pink, violet and golden yellow illuminates the sky behind the lamppost. It is as though the possibility of spring is already beginning to stir beneath the White Witch's endless winter.

For those familiar with Lewis's story, this first meeting carries a deeper significance. Mr Tumnus initially intends to betray Lucy to the White Witch, yet her innocence and kindness awaken his conscience. He ultimately chooses to protect her, risking his own safety rather than surrendering his new friend.

It is this quiet act of courage that makes their friendship so memorable. Before the arrival of Aslan, before the great battle and the return of spring, there is simply a little girl who trusts a stranger, and a faun who discovers the strength to do what is right.

Created as a one-of-a-kind original painting, Lucy Meets Mr Tumnus showcases Kerry Darlington's intricate hand-painted detail, from the delicate textures of Tumnus's fur to the crystalline branches and luminous winter landscape. Her expressive use of colour transforms the frozen woodland into a place of extraordinary beauty, capturing both the wonder of discovery and the tenderness of an unlikely friendship.

As a one-of-a-kind original painting, Lucy Meets Mr Tumnus captures the very essence of Kerry Darlington's fascination with literary fantasy, childhood wonder and the extraordinary friendships that shape our stories. A beautifully imagined tribute to one of literature's most cherished encounters, it reminds us that even in the deepest winter, a single act of kindness can be the beginning of something truly magical.
