One of Scott Bauer's favourite French composers, Marin Marais, utilised the silence between notes in a remarkable way, creating a space to breathe between sounds. This painting is laid out as a series of colour fields and intervals where the deeply-coloured ground reads to Scott like silence, punctuated by warm-hued bands of colour operating like sound. The falling away of a legato note, the reverberation of a fading sound, the space at the horizon that feels infinite: these ideas informed the final form and spirit of this work.
