Together We're Unlimited – Kerry Darlington

What happens when two people who could hardly be more different discover that together, they might just change the world? In Together We're Unlimited, Kerry Darlington returns to the extraordinary friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, inspired by Gregory Maguire's Wicked and the beloved musical adaptation of the same name.

Set against the magnificent green spires of the Emerald City, the two witches stand together in a moment suspended between friendship and destiny. Glinda, radiant in an elaborate pink gown adorned with delicate flowers, holds her sparkling wand close. Behind her, Elphaba appears in rich emerald green, her pointed black hat and sweeping botanical robes lending her a commanding presence. Her broomstick rests across the composition, a familiar symbol of the remarkable journey still to come.

Yet it is their relationship, rather than their magical powers, that gives the painting its emotional heart. Elphaba and Glinda are opposites in almost every conceivable way, divided by appearance, temperament and the expectations placed upon them. Nevertheless, beneath those differences lies a friendship that will profoundly change them both.

The title Together We're Unlimited recalls one of the most powerful sentiments in Wicked: the belief that friendship can make the impossible feel achievable. There is a poignancy to Kerry's interpretation, particularly for those familiar with the witches' eventual separation and the very different legends that will be written about them.

Darlington's richly decorative approach brings Oz to life through intricate floral detailing, luminous greens, vivid pinks and fantastical architecture. The towering spires of the Emerald City rise behind the two witches, while one of Oz's famous flying monkeys soars above them. A small but significant detail, the creature connects the painting to the wider world of Menagerie, where extraordinary animals, unlikely companions and misunderstood beings are woven into the stories of the characters we love. From the delicate botanical patterns of the witches' clothing to the fantastical creatures inhabiting Kerry's magical landscapes, every detail invites us further into the story.

As a one-of-a-kind original painting, Together We're Unlimited embodies Kerry Darlington's fascination with fairy tales, misunderstood heroines and the enduring power of friendship. It is a celebration of the people who see beyond our differences, recognise our potential and remind us that some of the greatest magic in life is found in the friendships we choose.
