10 Trees, 1 Galaxy

Wyecliffe Galleries is proud to present emerging artist Becky Smith’s first major body of works ‘The Constellation Collection’. Commissioned exclusively for our collectors, we unveil 10 new awe-inspiring original works. Cast upon sheets of metal aluminium, every composition is charged with the artist’s signature UV glow resulting in a startling series of works transformed by night-time.

Having experienced a sensational rise to prominence for her ground-breaking works exploring natural phenomenon from the earth to the skies, Smith takes her new collection to the stars and beyond. Influenced by astrology from an early age, the artist unifies the symbolic silhouette of the cherry blossom tree with her curiosity for stargazing and space travel. Every tree becomes a window to marvel at breath-taking constellations and infinite galaxies as far as the eye can see.

Orion

Inspired by one of the most distinctive star constellations seen across both Hemispheres, in Greek mythology Orion is one the greatest hunters to have ever lived. Cast in midnight black, Smith has painted a thousand stars in tiny daubs of multi-coloured paint. Provoking thoughts of infinite worlds and possibilities, Orion is as enigmatic as it is beautiful.

Libra

Representing equilibrium and harmony, the star constellation of Libra is joined up by Smith’s paintbrush with powerful effect. Taking its name from the Latin term for weighing scales, this symbolic notion of justice is hidden amongst the stars, under the ruling planet of Venus. A daydream in indigo purple and pale pink, Librais transformed at night by the artists signature UV glow paint.

Leo

Packed with symbology, Smith has introduced the recognisable star constellation of Leo to her Galaxy Tree dedicated this summer sign of the zodiac. A small yet mighty lion as well as the symbol for the star sign can be found in the fiery depths of the universe. With the Sun as its ruling star planet, bright light illuminates our solar system with Jupiter and Saturn taking centre stage.

Gemini

A swirling spiral galaxy is at the heart of Smith’s homage to the Gemini star constellation. Carefully choosing a colour palette to reflect the birthstones of this zodiac sign, citrine, moonstone and tigers’ eye have been united by the artist to give this original work its distinctive place in The Constellation Collection.

Scorpio

In reference to the cherry blossom works that made her name, Smith harnesses the pink topaz birthstone to forge her Cosmic Tree dedicated to the constellation of Scorpio.  At the very edge of our solar system under the ruling planet Pluto, two astronauts explore deep space through Smith’s endless imagination.

Pisces

Painted in glowing green UV paint, the Pisces star constellation can be easily spotted amongst the surrounding galaxies. A water sign taking its name from the Latin word for fish, Smith has merged the inky blue tones of interstellar space with the oceans in recognition of the origin of this Zodiac sign. Features the ruling planet Neptune as well as the International Space Station.

Cancer

Smith has set the star constellation of Cancer amongst a colour palette of emerald and forest greens in honour of the month of May’s birthstone. Suspended between the Earth and star sign’s ruling planet of the Moon, a lone astronaut experiences zero gravity and views that few individuals will ever see first-hand.

Aries

Smith’s interpretation of the star constellation for Ariessees the planets cross the borders beyond her galaxy tree silhouette for the very first time. Rich in warm hues, the composition is heavily influenced by the star signs ruling planet, Mars. Known as the Red Planet, those born under this fire star sign are bold and dynamic; traits shared by this extraordinary composition.

Ursa Major

One of the biggest star constellations in the Northern skies, Ursa Major takes the form of The Great Bear. Reborn in a galaxy of rainbow colours, Smith has invigorated the deep-rooted mythology surrounding stargazing with a modern twist. Planets are treated to candy-coloured stripes, in the most playful work in The Constellation Collection.

Into Orbit

In her final work for the collection, Smith places our Solar System at the very heart of composition in Into Orbit.  Every planet from Mercury to Pluto is in perfect gravitational equilibrium as it circles the Sun. Uniting concepts from both art and science, the composition celebrates the accomplishment of space travel and its contribution to our understanding of the universe, and humanities place within it.
