Lhouette 'Knight Nurse'

Ronan Keating, Lhouette and Wyecliffe Galleries

Wyecliffe are privileged to announce that the original of seminal work Knight Nurse by leading artist Lhouette has smashed the estimate. Selling for an incredible £32,500 under auction at esteemed institution Sotheby’s London, 100% of proceeds being donated to Unicef.

Knight Nurse, Original and Boutique Edition - Proceeds to support Unicef

Commissioned by the Keatings’ especially for song Little Thing Called Love, this deluxe-scale original features as the centrepiece for the music video as well as the cover art for the single. A composition devoted to what might become a lifetime defining experience for a generation, the shared global response to COVID-19 has produced inspirational acts of philanthropy which will contribute to society. With title featuring a play-on-words from the medicinal flu treatment Night Nurse, Knight Nurse will sit firmly amongst the landmark moments of authentic artistic accomplishment. Capturing the zeitgeist of a year in which we have all been speaking a language punctuated by new terminology such as ‘lock down’ and ‘social distancing’, Lhouette powerfully summarises our new reality in his inimitable genre of Pop Maximalism.

In support of the children whose daily lives have been affected by corona-virus, the magnificent original work of Knight Nurse has been auctioned with renowned institution Sothebys, London. With the proceeds donated to Unicef, the original work has supported efforts to combat the biggest global crisis to affect children since the Second World War. The charity’s largest ever appeal to assist those whose schools have closed, the sale value will assist those who may be living in poverty in the UK as well as abroad. With over 80,000,000 children already helped, Unicef is aiming to reach many millions more with support in distance and home-based learning. Additionally, a boutique edition of 20 pieces plus 5 Artist Proofs as well as an XL Deluxe edition of just 5 pieces of Knight Nurse have also been made available to acquire via Wyecliffe Galleries.

Little Thing Called Love – Music Video

Unveiled by Ronan Keating on ITV’s Lorraine Show, Lhouette’s Knight Nurse was first seen by the public for the first time on Friday 29th May 2020 to coincide with the official release of Little Thing Called Love. Directed by Storm Keating and filmed in the woods behind their English home, the music video shows their son Cooper painting one of Lhouette’s signature motifs, a diamond heart in ruby reds.

With the profile of musician, artist and gallery supporting the cause, the unveiling of this powerful art piece as part of the music video for Little Thing Called Love reflects the context of our new reality. Adverts are now filmed from mobile phones and live programmes streamed directly from the kitchens of TV personalities; families divided by distance come together by Zoom video call and House Party for virtual Friday night drinks. Children are being home schooled or receiving distance learning – kitchen and dining tables are the new daily classroom to ensure learning can continue. Society has come to embrace the ‘makeshift’ ethos to pioneer new ways to keep connected, reflecting the gentler mood of our nation.

Harnessing this community spirit, the concept for Little Thing Called Love is both striking and heart-warming. With a significant social campaign responded to by tens of thousands, Ronan Keating invited fans to submit their own footage themed around sharing little things that they love. Designed to combat notions of isolation and anxiety, Keating asked for “moments that mean the world to you”. Sharing his own short clips, notable special memories included his wedding to wife Storm in which international superstar Ed Sheeran can be seen entertaining their guests. Smaller more intimate moments also featured – everyday family life, ice skating with his children along with vintage footage from his Boyzone days.

Sequenced to montage happy moments from private homes across the globe into the three-minute video accompaniment to the new single, Ronan and Storm’s young son Cooper has the duty and honour of unveiling Knight Nurse at the climax of the song. Though not originally intended for release as a single, Keating felt that the lyrics carried a potent message which could be supported by the release of an artwork dedicated to the importance of being kind and of caring for one another.

Knight Nurse - A Guardian Angel

Knight Nurse is steeped in sentiment; a powerful emblematic visual portraying the resilience of the global health care professionals fighting a pandemic the likes of which have not been seen for centuries. A portrait of a nurse sheathed in PPE, she is the embodiment of what will surely become the enduring visual memory of the frontline. A facemask obscuring a caring smile, she is the modern Florence Nightingale of our times. Borrowing vintage imagery from wartime propaganda, as well as footage from the news reels, the composition almost feels as though it could be circulated in repeat – posters and fliers sharing Lhouette’s campaign of positivity offers a similar mindset to that behind Little Thing Called Love. In his own words Lhouette describes the development of Knight Nurse;

“Working on the digital throws for the piece, I wanted something symbolic and obvious to signify the strength of our doctors and nurses. Originally, I started with the concept of a medal, though the design quickly evolved to a portrait to really get straight to the point and show what I was trying to do. Taking note of the times, I’ve included the nurse, the rainbow, the heart - It was really important that I kept this within the Lhouette language, and so the collage work supports both the concept and this style. Likewise, the piece has been deliberately stripped down and less brand heavy for impact, though retains my Pop Maximalist philosophy.”

Lhouette Interview - May 2020

Bought to life by layers of painstakingly hand-scored stencils and vast numbers of brightly coloured aerosol paints, emblems from our days of isolation have been collected and arranged into an astonishing assembly. Sensitive to colour, Lhouette has forged two distinct colour palettes which emerge amongst the greyscale. The distinctive yellow and red tones of the warning tape strewn across the government podiums, advising us to Stay Home and Stay Safe are intertwined throughout the pop collage design. The halo is formed from the seven colours of the rainbow, the symbol of our unity and support for not only the NHS but healthcare workers across the globe.

Originally envisaged as one single board, though modified where materials have been in short supply during the period of lockdown, the 2.1 x 1.2m original work has been pieced together from 8 smaller panels. With an almost bandaged quality, the piece is a living embodiment of the Make Do and Mend ethos of the wartime pamphlets.

“I really wanted to fill the piece with things that everyone could relate to - perhaps more of a British take on the experience, I’ve included the bunting as a small token to VE Day 75th Anniversary celebrations which raised spirits. There is also a teapot as a tribute to the British nations answer to most problems, ‘let’s have a cup of tea’. Washing your hands, padlocks to symbolise lockdown, the weighbridge 2-meter sign to signify social distancing…there have been lots of new rules and behaviours we’ve adopted during this time. The sway towards the digital has also really interested me; the need to shop online is referenced in the add to cart button, and video calling to stay in touch. Moving to the virtual streams also juxtaposes well with the re-emergence of natural habitats in response to the decline of international travel and human presence.”

Lhouette Interview - May 2020

The connection and mutual respect between Lhouette and the Keatings’ dates to Storm personally engaging the artist to produce a bespoke portrait of her husband in honour of his 40th birthday in 2017. A refined profile of the distinguished singer songwriter, the work is punctuated by Lhouette’s trademark pop collage – with all iconography having been hand-selected by Storm to celebrate much loved childhood cartoons and meaningful places are punctuated by the artists own symbology. Subtly featured is a quote from The Breakfast Club “Each one of us is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, a criminal.”  Overwhelmed by the gift, Ronan soon commissioned a beautiful matching portrait of Storm completing the cameo pairing.

Lhouette was the natural choice for a pair who adore contemporary urban art; his accomplished use of raw materials and pop maximalist vision has received both critical acclaim and prominent international collectors. Notable successes included his invitation by an art committee including Sir Peter Blake to stage a residency at 45 Park Lane in collaboration with The Dorchester Collection. The sell-out collection in his own words “intricately intertwined lowbrow pop culture iconography and mixed media” to produce a landmark body of work, paving the way for future success. In 2018 the artist partnered with Purling London, and transformed a full-scale chess set into a fun fully functional work of art. This conceptual work of art went on to showcase at iconic fine art auction house Christie’s London as well as feature on the BBC’s The Great Pottery Throw Down. Notable private collectors alongside Ronan and Storm Keating include Antonio Banderas, Adrian Newey, OBE, and The Khayami Family.

Documenting the Times

The UK has clapped in unison and perhaps 8pm on Thursdays will never quite be the same again. The paths of leafy parks have been sprayed with 2m measurements warning pedestrians to stay apart and a nation has tentatively wait for the daily announcement at 5pm. The birds have sung louder on the once a day allocated walk, and child and adult alike have scrubbed their hands with extra attention. Lhouette has put it all here in Knight Nurse; a visual commentary on our times, in his inimitable artistic handwriting.

This generation will be forever indebted to the health workers of the world for keeping our society safe and protected. They are the contemporary knights that have unflinching answered our call for them to save the day. There are also the day to day heroes who should also be celebrated; the parents who have become teachers, the neighbours who have bought food to those in quarantine as well as every key worker who has kept the country running in face of a pandemic the likes of which we hope we will never see again.

As his flagship gallery Wyecliffe Galleries therefore couldn’t be prouder to support Lhouette in collaboration with Ronan and Storm Keating to unveil Knight Nurse. An artistic contribution documenting these times, in homage to the life-saving and heroic health workers around the world; benefitting Unicef in its continued effort to support children and families in the most need of help during this time.
