Midsummer Eve - Kerry Darlington

An enchanted garden, a gathering of extraordinary creatures and a moment suspended between dreams and reality. In Midsummer Eve, Kerry Darlington draws inspiration from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the timeless imagery of the Garden of Eden and the fantastical worlds of her favourite literature.

At the centre of the composition, a young woman sits peacefully amongst cascading flowers and woodland foliage. Butterflies settle around her as a white bird spreads its wings, a squirrel descends from the branches and a beautiful white creature watches from above. Every corner of the painting reveals another delicate detail, another curious inhabitant of Kerry's imagined paradise.

Amongst these creatures is a pine marten, an affectionate reference to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials and the extraordinary relationship between Lyra Belacqua and her dæmon, Pantalaimon. It is a particularly fitting inclusion within Menagerie, a collection exploring the friendships and animal companions that give our favourite stories their emotional depth.

The title itself carries a delightful double meaning. Midsummer Eve recalls both the magical atmosphere of a midsummer evening and the innocence of Eve within an idyllic garden, while the surrounding woodland evokes the enchanted forests of Shakespearean fantasy.

Created as one of Kerry Darlington's celebrated Unique Editions, the composition is brought to life through individually applied three-dimensional embellishments and a beautifully polished gloss resin finish. These distinctive techniques introduce depth and luminosity, allowing the intricate flowers, foliage and woodland creatures to take on an almost sculptural quality.

With only 75 Limited Editions and 20 Artist Proofs worldwide, Midsummer Eve is an exceptional opportunity to collect one of Kerry's most richly imagined compositions, celebrating the magical relationship between nature, storytelling and the creatures who inhabit our dreams.
