Anne Blundell - The Great British Outdoors

Anne Blundell - The Great British Outdoors

“Have you forgotten to have a beautiful breakfast in a countryside village? Then, you have forgotten the life!”

― Mehmet Murat ildan

Quaint little seaside villages, bustling with life: medieval wool towns: Cornish tin mines and cosy country pubs. The English countryside is a treasure trove of characters, beautiful old buildings, gorgeous scenery and timeless culture.

The beloved artist Anne Blundell has made a career and lifestyle chronicling these places with a celebrated attention to detail and an almost kinetic sense of bustle and flow.

Sailing the harbours, rivers and navigations of the UK with her husband: Anne immerses herself in British life, meeting fascinating characters and observing their day to day activities from work to leisure. In particular, Anne is drawn to the Cornish coasts, the Lake District and her native Lancashire.

A key touchstone of Anne’s technique is her dramatic use of perspective: very rarely does she close in on characters and situations, instead adopting a distant view full of intricate touches. A slightly surreal use of perspective allows buildings, scenery and dozens of meticulous figures to interact at once, ensuing every work is full to the brim with incident and detail. Much in the manner of a children’s storybook; the viewer can stare at an Anne Blundell original for hours – there will always be something they have missed! This technique also adds to the effect of childhood nostalgia, for summer holidays and the timeless world of youth.

Using acrylic on board, Blundell chooses a bright, bold colours: often restricting her palette to a few harmonious tones, then a dramatically contrasting accent colour to create a vivid ‘pop’.

Whether at home on the Lancastrian coast or on her boat with her husband: Anne Blundell continues to take inspiration from her beloved UK and celebrating them with a uniquely magic touch.

“At the beach, life is different. Time doesn't move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun."

― Sandy Gingras
