Artist: Louise Dear
Swing from the Chandelier is the dazzling finale of Louise Dear’s Pursuing Pleasure collection, a celebration of joy, charisma, and the unrestrained rhythm of life. Inspired by Damien Rice’s haunting cover of Sia’s anthem, the painting channels themes of escapism, indulgence, and wild abandon.
A follow-up to Dear’s earlier work The Love Affair, this painting expands the concept with a bold new muse, her tumbling curls rendered in hypnotic swirls of line and colour. At her side blooms a single, monumental peony, each petal enhanced and abstracted in layers of vibrant paint, sanded back and repainted to achieve dazzling depth. A flash of green, created from radiator paint fused with iridescent ink, shimmers with interference as the light shifts.
The muse herself exudes mystery and power: veiled by petals yet alive with presence, her gaze follows the viewer across the room. This tension, between allure and authority, visibility and control, recalls John Berger’s writings on the gaze, with echoes of Venetian masks and the theatre of looking. Framed by last-minute touches of gold leaf, the result is an artwork alive with movement, energy, and a fearless sense of pleasure.
