Why Is A Raven Like A Writing Desk - Original

Frame Silver / Blue Frame

In the original Why is a Raven Like a Writing Desk?, Kerry Darlington captures that unmistakable Wonderland stillness, the moment where everything feels just slightly out of place, and yet entirely as it should be.

Alice rests at the Mad Hatter’s table, her expression thoughtful, almost questioning, as though turning the riddle over in her mind. Nearby, the Doormouse drifts between sleep and story, while the tea continues to pour, endlessly and without explanation.

The Cheshire Cat watches on from behind, quietly amused, and scattered details, a playing card, a tiny key, the suggestion of “Drink Me”, weave through the composition, each one a subtle nod to the world Carroll created.

Influenced by the timeless illustrations of Arthur Rackham, Darlington approaches this piece with a more refined, figurative technique, allowing Alice’s presence to anchor the scene while the surrounding details gently unravel around her.

Finished with hand-applied gold leaf and sealed with an archival varnish, the surface carries a depth and richness that only exists in the original, every texture, every mark, a direct expression of the artist’s hand.

Entirely unique, this is the piece where the question begins, and where it remains, beautifully unanswered.
