An exuberant celebration of life, transformation and beauty in continual bloom, 'Growth' sees Becky Smith transform her signature skull motif through an extraordinary profusion of flowers, butterflies and birds.
Against a deep black ground, saturated blues, oranges, violets and pinks create an almost illuminated intensity. Look closer and strawberries, tiny blooms, winged creatures and fragments of text emerge from the composition. Here, nature doesn’t simply surround the skull, it forms it. The title 'Growth' becomes a reflection on renewal, change and the persistence of life.
The inspiration for 'Growth' came from a pair of bespoke commissions Becky created for a private collector in New York. Both featured floral skulls but were conceived as inversions of one another - one set against a dramatic black background, the other against gold. Their relationship as individual artworks that became more powerful when viewed together, inspired Becky to revisit the floral skull on a more intimate scale, ultimately creating Growth and its sibling work, Grace.
Created in acrylic paint, gold leaf and spray paint on canvas, 'Growth' combines intricate observation with Becky’s energetic mixed-media approach. Specialised UV glow-in-the-dark paint adds another dimension, allowing elements of the artwork to reveal themselves differently as the light changes.
At 60 x 60cm, this is the unique original behind an image subsequently chosen for limited edition release. While the edition allows the composition to be collected more widely, there will only ever be one original of 'Growth', giving this published painting particular rarity and significance within a Becky Smith collection.

Our meticulous 12-point checklist ensures every work upholds our exacting quality standards when dispatching one of our artworks.
Starting at dispatch from the artist's studio, we've worked together with our community of artists to ensure delivery to the gallery is as meticulous as possible - each work packaged safe transit.
Upon arrival in our Weybridge showroom, each new arrival is examined by the studio & dispatch team. Frames are scrutinised for a perfect finish: glass is polished to perfection with anti-static art cloths. Auxiliary features like the string/wire and certification on the reverse are checked for positioning and correct mounting. Finally, the work itself is inspected to ensure a flawless transition from studio to gallery. Upon purchase, the work is cleaned again and meticulously subjected to our trademark 12-point checking system to ensure a safe secure journey to its ultimate destination.
