Sithean - Original

Sithean - Kerry Darlington

Deep within an enchanted woodland, hidden amongst the trees and golden leaves, lies a secret world where fairies and woodland creatures live together in harmony.

In Sithean, Kerry Darlington returns to one of her most beloved artistic subjects, bringing together five delicate fairies within their own magical dwelling. Taking its name from the Scottish Gaelic term for a fairy hill, or hidden home of the fairy folk, Sithean invites us to imagine an extraordinary world existing quietly alongside our own, concealed from all but the most curious eyes.

Suspended amongst the branches, the five fairies inhabit a beautifully atmospheric woodland, accompanied by young birds and butterflies whose presence brings a wonderful sense of innocence, renewal and companionship. Some fairies appear to dance amongst the foliage, while others rest peacefully within their leafy surroundings, each contributing to the gentle rhythm of life within their secret home.

Fairies have fascinated Kerry for many years, becoming one of the most recognisable and enduring subjects within her artistic practice. Here, her affection for these elusive creatures is expressed through beautifully delicate figures, intricate woodland details and an enchanting interplay of colour and light.

Rich layers of emerald, jade and deep forest green create a dreamlike atmosphere, while luminous butterflies, softly coloured birds and pale woodland blossoms emerge from the shadows. Scattered throughout the composition, gold leaf embellishments illuminate the foliage, introducing precious flashes of warmth against the painting's cool, mysterious depths.

Created for Kerry Darlington's Menagerie collection, Sithean beautifully explores the relationships between magical beings and the creatures who share their world. The youngest inhabitants of this hidden woodland are surrounded by friendship, shelter and the quiet wonder of nature, celebrating the idea that even the smallest lives are part of something extraordinary.

A one-of-a-kind original painting, Sithean is a captivating celebration of folklore, imagination and Kerry's enduring fascination with the fairy realm. An artwork that rewards closer inspection, revealing new details and little moments of magic with every encounter.
