Artist: David Renshaw
'The Cushty Crusaders' is a hand-embellished boutique limited edition by British contemporary artist David Renshaw, inspired by one of the most memorable episodes of Only Fools and Horses.
The artwork pays affectionate tribute to “Heroes and Villains”, the classic episode in which Del Boy and Rodney Trotter head out dressed as Batman and Robin. Their plans take a typically Trotter-esque turn when the iconic yellow Trotters Independent Trading Co. three-wheeler breaks down, setting the scene for one of British comedy’s most enduring visual moments.
David Renshaw captures that extraordinary meeting of Peckham and Gotham with all the wit, nostalgia and storytelling for which his Iconic Cars Collection has become known.
The unmistakable yellow Trotters van sits proudly at the centre of the composition, Del Boy and Rodney appear as the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder, and the Bat-Signal illuminates the atmospheric sky above. Perched on the roof rack is David’s signature red heart; a playful reminder that beneath the comedy, his work is always ultimately about memory, connection and the things we love.
This time next year, they might not be millionaires, but for one evening, Peckham had its own superheroes.
David Renshaw’s Iconic Cars Collection celebrates legendary vehicles from film and television, recognising that the cars we remember from the screen often become cultural characters in their own right.
The yellow Trotters Independent Trading Co. Reliant is a perfect example. Instantly associated with Del Boy, Rodney and their eternally optimistic business empire, it has become one of the most recognisable vehicles in British comedy history.
In 'The Cushty Crusaders', David takes that familiar icon and surrounds it with visual references that Only Fools and Horses fans will instantly understand, creating an artwork that rewards both nostalgia and closer inspection.
It is bold, funny and unmistakably British, a piece designed to raise a smile every time you pass it.
Or, as Del might put it, cushty.
This boutique edition is produced as a limited edition giclée on canvas, with every individual artwork receiving hand-painted embellishments by David Renshaw himself.
These finishing touches introduce subtle variations in texture and detail from edition to edition, giving every piece its own individual character and creating a tangible connection to the artist’s hand.
With an exceptionally small worldwide edition of just 25, The Cushty Crusaders has been created with collectors firmly in mind. Each example is individually numbered and offers an accessible way to own David’s distinctive interpretation of this much-loved piece of British television history.
For collectors of David Renshaw limited editions, Only Fools and Horses artwork, British comedy art, iconic television cars or contemporary British art, this is a wonderfully characterful addition to the collection.
No dodgy briefcases. No hooky watches. Just a decidedly lovely jubbly piece of Renshaw nostalgia.
Please note that these are hand-gilded frames and therefore the patina can vary from piece to piece, including areas of darker and lighter shade within each edge.
