Urban Art in a Coastal Property;One of the most daring designs to date was three years in the making with the culmination of 15 bespoke pieces installed, a project overseen by Katia and Ben. The perfect harmony of client, designer, gallery and artist working collaboratively, the maximalist urban art of Lhouette was the perfect fit for a property designed to imitate the sweeping lines of a luxury yacht. Situated on a quiet bay, this elegant new home has sweeping views of the coastline from every angle. Custom designed for the occupants; every line of sight had been tailored to best display what could be described as permanent exhibition of one of the most avante garde artists on the contemporary scene.

Situated by the largest residential fish tank in the United Kingdom, sibling portraits ‘Voyagers I & II’ weave tropical and oceanic references throughout; little trinkets which nod not only to the aquatic installation nearby but to the first-floor swimming pool and naval inspired property design.  

The vast scale of the project was the opportunity to progress specialist integrated lighting with scale works for extra impact. Signature collaged motif Angel Cake was mounted as a custom work with LED strips shaped to the reverse of the silhouette, perfect for the playroom it was created for. The same treatment was used to emphasise the extraordinary interpretation of Last Orders. Lhouette’s largest wall sculpture to date, and the only ever in sleek monochromes at the time of writing was also the first to combine smooth gloss resin and diamond dust finishes.

Placed in a Dressing Room of dreams, bold Chanel references completed the composition with a couture touch. With a playful flair, the exact schematic of a Lamborghini Aventador S hood was obtained and a one of kind shaped wall sculpture was born. A cool clash of primary coloured geometry and iconic bull branding on the surface, which when displayed and backlit flawlessly integrated into a supercar themed space.

Two standout works for Him and for Her completed the Master Bedroom. Taking Brigette Bardot and Steve McQueen as their talisman, Lhouette returned to his up-cycled roots placing reclaimed wooden panels each covered in handpicked montage beneath each sprayed portrait. Looming over two meters tall each, custom frames seamlessly hid LED light strips behind wooden rebate to ensure every area was perfectly illuminated. So strongly did Lhouette feel about these works, that stand out boutique edition ‘Mass McQueen’released this Summer was inspired by this space and project.

Referencing works from seminal presentation at the Dorchester, the centrepiece to this collection was extraordinary portrait Green Eyed.  The concept of both standing out and harmonising were the rivalling requirements for this exciting brief; using references to the verde distressed crocodile leather encasing the stairwell balustrades for his palette and balancing the composition with perfectly symmetry, the work demonstrates the sheer talent of the artist to refine spray paint and stencil to landscape beauty with the female face.

Taking over three days to install, the collection of works marks one of the brightest and most daring briefs to date, and firmly positions urban art at the forefront of art in interiors moving into 2020.

A highlight for Darren this year was overseeing the art selections for a minimal and clean lined property situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Taking advantage of the ample light and open plan living, a mezzanine level had been created in the newly built property. Placing the three-storey high chimney breast at the very centre of the home, the extended vertical wall was the ideal setting for a multi-piece original work from American artist Chris DeRubeis. Echoing the structured lines of the home itself, the fragmented panels on metal transform throughout the day as the daylight dances throughout the property.

Ben had been watching the work of Richard Knight for some time, eager to sign his eye-catching compositions up at the earliest opportunity. Working between London and the Isle of Wight, Knight has made his name in the creation of urban landscapes that challenge the viewer with their disruptive use of pattern and impression of the familiar. Cities are broken down into form, shape and colour and deftly reassembled, moving a landmark this way or that to improve the view. With a background in graphic design, Knight’s geometric stencilling technique is overlaid on top of soft brushstrokes, juxtaposing hard line and intuitive painting. Stunningly attractive and sitting between the modern and the classic his works have been a breath of fresh air in a very crowded genre.

Inspired by organic nature and linear formalism, it was with great excitement Wyecliffe welcomed the bold, vivid ideas and pristine original canvases of American artist Scott Bauer. Spotted at an art fair on an otherwise bleak Sunday afternoon, the eye-catching works lit up the room and were a must have for Wyecliffe’s portfolio and have quickly become Katia’s personal favourites. Bauer’s remarkable abstract panels form a spectacular juxtaposition between two cultures: the gulf coast of Florida and its Ringling Museum of Art – with European Renaissance and Baroque paintings. This extraordinary fusion has resulted in colour, form and beauty of nature pared down to their powerful and bold essential elements. Utterly striking and singular originals for a genuine statement in any space and introduces an entirely new and exciting vision the art world.

Celebrating his 30^th anniversary as a professional artist, Mackenzie Thorpe established his presence on the contemporary art scene with his depictions of the struggles and celebrations of everyday family life. Internationally recognised, his art communicates to the heart by uniting those who have loved and lost, despaired and hoped. These themes of humanity have earned him high profile public commissions, as well as the position as Official Artist of the Tour De France, Yorkshire earlier this year. Though also recognised as a talented draughtsman, Ben and Katia were drawn to Thorpe’s sensational stainless steel and bronze full-scale sculptures. Designed by the artist and cast at a world-renowned foundry in America, Love Picker and Love in the Forest were cast and shipped across the Atlantic specially to augment Wyecliffe’s portfolio. Dramatic statement works which captivate all visitors through the gallery doors, it was a hugely proud moment for the team to finally unveil our representation of this legendary talent.

Flying annually to New York, Ben spotted the effervescent and atmospheric panels of Mary Johnston and was charmed by her dreamlike landscapes and rich ethereal skies. Based in a small cabin situated in the Chequamegon-Nicollete National Forest in NW Wisconsin, the artist has views of both the woodland and a crystal-clear lake. Both inform and inspire her original works, many of which are carefully painted onto natural birch panels, enhancing the aesthetic of the pure wood beneath. Compact in scale they can be arranged in infinite ways for a dazzling range of design possibilities.

Thrillingly unique, the fantastical characters from David Goode were akin to an army in bronze arriving in the gallery from straight from Middle Earth. The youngest ever sculptor at Madame Tussauds, Goode learnt his craft by depicting the likenesses of some of the most famous (and infamous) characters of the 1980s. Channelling his skills into a series of solid bronze sculptures cast with the most respected technique, the Lost Wax Process, an ongoing collection of goblins and faerie folk have emerged from the artists imagination. Recommended to Ben by a close patron and friend of the gallery, the compact coffee-table sculptures are supported in gallery by standout centrepiece A Game of Chess.

To support the growing social channels and with the continued ambition to bring collector and artist closer together through world class content, we have welcomed two exceptional new members of the team to Wyecliffe’s marketing and branding department. Cara Steel and Elliot Metaireau form a powerful duo who are looking forward to capturing and sharing the freshest works along with exclusive Q&As, artist studio visits plus trends in art for interiors. They take on an incredible legacy left by previous colleague Anthony Lewis who was a central figure at Wyecliffe from his first day in February 2016; he left the gallery earlier this summer to pursue a new role at London heritage site The Golden Hinde.

The last 12 months have seen the triple space gallery and impressive studio at Wyecliffe transformed for dedicated exhibitions for two landmark presentations. An exceptional feat for our dedicated studio team, Keyleigh and Adam were challenged to catalogue the extraordinary body of art commissioned especially for each event, amongst the sum 2,500 vault of existing pieces; swiftly followed by the installation and lighting of each artwork displayed. The result was two of the most successful evenings Wyecliffe has ever hosted.

Returning for his first artist attendance since his prestigious collaboration with 45 Park Lane in association with The Dorchester, Lhouette was warmly welcomed back to Wyecliffe Galleries for an exclusive, invitation only evening. Sponsored by Carbon Funding Consultants, it was a spectacular event which saw the unveiling of the first new female silhouette to be added to his cast of characters since 2017’s Tokyo Dreaming. Bazooka Jo, a sassy fully-loaded stiletto-wearing assassin, was presented in the format of two left and right facing geometric wall sculptures.  

In the centre of the display, their target was the phenomenal Attachment Issues. A ground-breaking new original work, the image of which has born a hugely successful boutique and deluxe edition range was also shown for the first time. Staggeringly intricate to create and composed from dozens of complex aerosol layers, the title is one of his most memorable to date. The event has set the stage for what promises to be an extraordinary 2020 for Lhouette, with Wyecliffe proudly supporting his artistic endeavours as the artist’s flagship gallery.

Contemporary materials enrich a more traditional nature inspired subject matter, from tree motifs to blossoming wildlife. Her work joins the ranks of American artists Chris DeRubeis and Ken Rausch who are established in the field of metal art, though unlike her contemporaries Smith lavishes paint upon the smooth surface to form her motifs. Capitalising on the reflective quality of the material, all three artists utilise lighting conditions to bring their compositions to life.

Contributions to the trend came from every genre; Kerry Darlington launched her first ever circular boutique edition, the title work from November’s landmark event with the artist. By the Light of the Moon is a feat in creation; never wishing to abandon her ethos for editions which give the impression of the original work, each one is hand crafted with individual elements and finished with gloss resin. Robin Coleman transformed his signature painstaking collage works into fun circles and speech bubbles with cartoon phrases ‘bang’ and ‘pow’ exploding from the cut stamps and comics.

A conversation starter, circular art is an incredible way to introduce a real point of interest and difference to your home and collection. Next year we anticipate continued development of shaped wall art, with artists also introducing other motifs including playful hearts and stars as lively and eye-catching décor.

At the very forefront of this incredible concept, Robin Eckardt has made huge leaps in the application of UV crystals embedded within her work. With new compositions almost intended to be viewed at twilight and into the night, the glowing illumination is now an active influence on the direction of Eckardt’s work. The first in a new series of pieces exploring the Northern Lights, Borealis is a staggering interpretation of this elusive natural phenomenon. Igneousand Lost in Dreams entirely transform when viewed in day versus night, almost making for two paintings hidden within in one canvas. Key private clients and designers have secured major works from Eckardt this year, specifically seeking her out for her use of ultraviolet reactive materials. Having recently completed several major new works here at Wyecliffe’s studio, 2020 is set to be outstanding for this unrivalled artist.

With 2019 cementing the positions of Wyecliffe exclusive signings The Bisallion Brothers, Kate Taylor and many more, as well as the ascension of distinct compositions from independent artists David Renshaw and Paola Cassias, the next 12 months will see our broad, extraordinary range of painters and sculptors break new ground in the creative fields.
