Artist: Mark Illuminati
Fifty years after the summer that helped ignite punk rock across Britain, Mark Illuminati is looking back at the people, music and attitude that shaped his youth.
King of Punk depicts Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, reimagined as the King in Illuminati’s three-part 50 Years of Punk collection. For Mark, this is personal.
Growing up in London, punk became his playground. He was just 12 when he found himself falling in with the bands and characters surrounding the emerging scene, an experience he credits with shaping the person he became:
“Punk formed me as a young person. Made me naughty, made me question everything and generally made me a pain in the ass.” Mark Illuminati
Sid Vicious occupies a particular place in those memories. Mark never met him, yet describes Sid as someone he “adored as a kid”, and, five decades later, crowns him the undisputed King of Punk.
The composition itself plays with a wonderfully deliberate contradiction. Mark has taken the traditional structure of a Victorian playing card and used it to frame one of punk’s most infamous anti-establishment figures.
Originally created as an oil painting on wood, '50 Years of Punk - Sid Vicious' has been released as a strictly limited edition of 50 prints, with each piece individually hand-finished by Mark Illuminati and presented in a choice of black or white frame.
The result brings together contemporary art, British music history and Mark’s own first-hand connection to the world surrounding the birth of punk.
For collectors of Sid Vicious art, Sex Pistols artwork, punk rock art and British music memorabilia, King of Punk marks the 50th anniversary of a movement whose influence continues to reach far beyond music.
