Following the Yellow Brick Road through L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz, three unlikely travelling companions join Dorothy on her journey to the Emerald City; a Scarecrow longing for a brain, a Tin-Man searching for a heart and a Cowardly Lion desperate to find his courage.
In The Scarecrow, The Tin-Man and The Cowardly Lion, Kerry Darlington revisits these much-loved characters through her distinctive painted-sketch technique, using transparent acrylic paints rather than traditional pencil. The fluidity of the medium allows Kerry to introduce delicate shifts in tone and colour while retaining the immediacy and intricate linework of a drawing.
At the centre of the composition, the Tin-Man gazes mournfully at a brilliant red heart held between his metal hands, its vivid colour standing out against the otherwise restrained palette. The Scarecrow leans over his shoulder as crows circle overhead, while the Cowardly Lion sits alongside them, his wonderfully expressive face completing the trio.
Their individual quests are amongst the most enduring ideas within The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Each believes that reaching the Wizard will give them something they lack, yet along the road they repeatedly demonstrate the very qualities they are searching for; the Scarecrow thinks his way through problems, the Tin-Man shows enormous compassion and the Lion finds courage when his friends need him.
Their stories have since travelled far beyond Baum's original novel, becoming part of the wider mythology of Oz and taking on new meaning within Wicked, where familiar characters and events are viewed from a very different side of the story. It is this layered world of fairy tale, literature and reinvention that has long fascinated Kerry, allowing her to return to characters collectors know while finding something new within them.
Created in an exceptionally small edition, only 45 Limited Editions and 15 Artist Proofs are available worldwide. Each is produced on fine art paper and individually embellished by hand, with silver leaf applied to the Limited Edition and copper leaf reserved for the Artist Proofs, before being finished with varnish.
Signed by Kerry Darlington and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, this new edition brings three old friends back together, and with them, a reminder that sometimes the things we travel furthest to find have been with us all along.

Our meticulous 12-point checklist ensures every work upholds our exacting quality standards when dispatching one of our artworks.
Starting at dispatch from the artist's studio, we've worked together with our community of artists to ensure delivery to the gallery is as meticulous as possible - each work packaged safe transit.
Upon arrival in our Weybridge showroom, each new arrival is examined by the studio & dispatch team. Frames are scrutinised for a perfect finish: glass is polished to perfection with anti-static art cloths. Auxiliary features like the string/wire and certification on the reverse are checked for positioning and correct mounting. Finally, the work itself is inspected to ensure a flawless transition from studio to gallery. Upon purchase, the work is cleaned again and meticulously subjected to our trademark 12-point checking system to ensure a safe secure journey to its ultimate destination.
