At the centre of this extraordinary scene, Alice sits quietly amongst an exuberant gathering of animal companions. Above her, the Cheshire Cat watches with his familiar mischievous grin, while the magnificent Dodo stands proudly nearby, his richly coloured plumage making him one of the composition's most spectacular inhabitants.

An imposing owl, an assortment of brilliantly coloured birds, rabbits and woodland creatures complete this most unlikely of gatherings. Butterflies flutter amongst the flowers, fantastical mushrooms spring from the grass and two extraordinary trees frame the scene with branches overflowing with vivid pink, turquoise, yellow and violet leaves.

There is a delightful contradiction at the heart of the painting. Alice, the little girl who once struggled to make sense of Wonderland's peculiar inhabitants, appears perfectly at home amongst them.
