David Renshaw - Our First Date

Doris and Ted are David Renshaw’s irresistible couple. Personifying his artistic genre of Northern Romance; they are much-loved for their unwavering affection and rock-solid commitment.

These virtues of family, love and togetherness are traits admired of the Northern England so close to David Renshaw’s heart. Indeed, whatever epic landscape Doris and Ted are painted in; they carry these ‘Northern Romance’ qualities with them. Imbibing any scenery, no matter how epic with a homespun intimacy. Indeed, although the sweeping scenery of the Peak District and Lake District are spectacularly represented in David’s works: his premier couple have been depicted in a dazzling gazetteer of locations – from Brooklyn Bridge New York to the beaches of Mauritius!

Now, fans of Doris, Ted are in for a real treat as David Renshaw gives us the most remarkable destination of all… Taking us back in time to where it all began!

Our First Date is a spectacular Boutique Edition, featuring his irresistible characters as never seen before… The teenage Doris and Ted have all the charisma of their grown-up selves: with the added charm of their blue jeans and converse cool (and Vespa & Lambretta scooters).

Of course, with a Northern Romance original, the characters are only half the story…. Renshaw is also a masterful and celebrated painter of landscapes and the scenery of this work has a very special story indeed. David Renshaw himself explains…

The back story on this edition is that it is based on mine and Claire’s first date back when we were teenagers! It’s based on an old Victorian shelter situated on the promenade in Southport.... the very one we sat at (drinking a cheap bottle of fizzy plonk from memory) I also rode a scooter back then too! .... I think the shelter is painted a different colour now!

Once these conditions are met: the works are painstakingly recorded in our state-of-the-art database system (including advanced location tracking) and extensively photographed by Lucy and the image processing team. With extensive ‘macro’ detail shots utilising the Canon EOS 5DS camera: these shots not only form the basis for internet and print promotions: but form a visual record of the work at ultra-high resolution.

Finally; the works that aren’t immediately selected for the gallery walls (or better still, immediately dispatched to a lucky collector) are archived in our temperature controlled ‘vault’. Stored upright, fully surrounded in custom high-impact expanded rubber: the securely stored paintings are routinely checked and rotated onto gallery displays to ensure they remain in mint condition.

A thoughtful and quietly spoken artist, Scott Bauer’s polite manner is the perfect reflection of a series of accomplished original acrylic works with pristine painted stripes as their signature structure. A genre named by the artist as linear formalism, the term conjures thoughts of complex algebraic formulas, a mindset far away from the freedom of creative imagination. Using fragments of memory along with his perception of the world, the artist distills light and colour into stunningly rendered stripes. Waved, faded and pure, the outcome are pieces both calmly meditative and excitingly vivid. Wyecliffe Galleries are privileged to share an insight in to the mind of this emerging artist.
