Our Special Place, Ambleside – Limited Edition by David Renshaw

'Our Special Place, Ambleside' sees David Renshaw return to the Lake District with an exquisitely observed pencil study of Bridge House, one of Ambleside's most distinctive historic landmarks. Limited to just 25 editions worldwide, the work brings the romance of David's much-loved Northern Romance Collection into one of Britain's most celebrated landscapes.

Set above Stock Beck in the heart of Ambleside, Bridge House has stood for centuries, its diminutive scale and extraordinary position above the water making it an enduring symbol of the town. Built by the Braithwaite family and historically associated with their nearby orchards, the little stone building has served many purposes during its long life, from apple store and counting house to tearoom, workshop and home. Today, its stone walls, slate roof and arched bridge remain instantly familiar to generations of visitors to the Lake District.

David approaches the scene with the delicacy his pencil studies demand. Fine graphite describes the irregular Lakeland stone, bare branches, running water and distant landscape, while areas of untouched paper allow light and atmosphere to soften the composition. Against this restrained monochrome palette, the familiar flashes of Renshaw red become especially vivid; five hearts rise above the chimney, drawing the eye upwards through the composition and placing love firmly at the centre of the landscape.

Walking towards Bridge House are Ted and Doris, the couple at the heart of David Renshaw's acclaimed Northern Romance series. Seen from behind and close together, they are characteristically understated; there is no need for grand gestures. Their presence gives the historic landscape its contemporary story, suggesting a familiar walk shared by two people for whom this particular corner of the world holds memories of its own.

That sentiment gives 'Our Special Place, Ambleside' a resonance far beyond the Lake District. For those who know Ambleside, the drawing may recall holidays beside Windermere, walks through the town, familiar routes into the fells or years spent returning to a favourite part of Cumbria. For others, Bridge House becomes a setting for a more universal idea; the way certain places acquire meaning through the people, occasions and memories we associate with them.

The title is beautifully chosen. A special place needn't be somewhere extraordinary to everyone; it only has to be extraordinary to you.

The Northern Romance Collection

Love, memory and a sense of place have long provided the emotional language of David Renshaw's Northern Romance Collection. Through Ted and Doris, David has developed an ongoing narrative in which landscapes become repositories for shared experience, with his signature red heart providing the visual thread that connects the series.

In 'Our Special Place, Ambleside', the architecture and landscape provide more than a setting. Bridge House is carefully observed and unmistakably rooted in place, yet the presence of Ted and Doris shifts the focus towards memory and shared experience. David's ascending red hearts punctuate the otherwise monochrome composition, drawing together the physical landscape and the emotional narrative that runs throughout his Northern Romance work.

David Renshaw's Pencil Studies

David's pencil studies occupy a distinctive place within his wider practice. Without the saturated colour of his original oil paintings, attention shifts towards his draughtsmanship: line, tonal variation, architectural observation and the subtle handling of light.

Wyecliffe Galleries was the original gallery to introduce David Renshaw's pencil sketch studies to collectors, and they have since become an important and highly collectable strand of his work. The selective introduction of red has become particularly effective within these compositions, preserving the quiet character of the drawing while retaining one of the artist's most recognisable motifs.

With an edition of only 25 worldwide, 'Our Special Place, Ambleside' combines David Renshaw's romantic storytelling with a meticulously drawn portrait of one of the Lake District's best-known landmarks. For collectors of David's Northern Romance work, admirers of Lake District and Ambleside art, or those with their own emotional connection to this remarkable part of Britain, it is a beautifully considered celebration of the places that become part of our personal history.
